The Roadrunners' best regular season came in 2017-18, when they won 42 games and finished first in the Pacific Division. The club was in its second year. In April 2016 the Arizona Coyotes announced that they had bought the Springfield Falcons, their American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate, and would move it from Massachusetts to Tucson for the 2016–17 season. The new name recalled the Phoenix Roadrunners, a name used by professional hockey teams in Phoenix from 1967 to 2009. It also gave the club a joke at the parent team's expense, since a road runner and a coyote are the cartoon pair.

In the 2018 Calder Cup playoffs Tucson lost the Division Finals to the Texas Stars, which remains the deepest run the club has made. The second Pacific Division title, in 2019-20, was awarded when the season was cancelled because of COVID-19. The team had 36 wins at that point.

Michael Carcone gave the club its best individual season in 2022-23. His 85 points made him the AHL's leading scorer, and he received the John B. Sollenberger Trophy and a place on the First All-Star Team. The team itself went out in the first round to the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

One trophy has stayed in Tucson every year since 2018-19: the I-8 Border Cup, which is decided each season against the San Diego Gulls.

For 2024-25 the Roadrunners planned to play some home games at Mullett Arena in Tempe. A land auction for a possible new arena was then cancelled, and all 36 home games were played at the Tucson Convention Center, which seats 9,275 for hockey.
