In 2020-21, the American Hockey League (AHL) Pacific Division teams played for a trophy, the John D. Chick Trophy. The Silver Knights went into it as division leaders, having finished first, and reached the final. They lost that final to the Bakersfield Condors.

The club had existed for barely a year by then. The San Antonio Rampage franchise was purchased on 6 February 2020, and the move to Nevada was approved on 28 February. The name followed on 28 May. "Silver Knights" comes from Nevada's "Silver State" moniker, and the team was set up as the AHL affiliate of the NHL's Vegas Golden Knights.

The franchise itself is much older. It began in 1971 as the Tidewater Wings, became the Virginia Wings, and returned in 1979 as the Adirondack Red Wings, a name it kept until 1999. From 2002 until it left for Henderson it played in San Antonio as the Rampage.

The arena has a trail of names. It was planned as the Henderson Event Center, was later called The Dollar Loan Center, and is now Lee's Family Forum, with room for 6,000.

Among the players, Gage Quinney came in as an undrafted free agent and leads the club in points. Peyton Krebs and Trevor Connelly, both first-round draft picks, have also played for the team.
