The Wolf Pack play in the American Hockey League (AHL) as the main development team of the New York Rangers. Igor Shesterkin and Adam Fox both came through Hartford on the way to New York.
The franchise had been the Binghamton Rangers. On August 6, 1997 it moved to Hartford, after the NHL's Hartford Whalers left for North Carolina and the building downtown, then the Hartford Civic Center and now PeoplesBank Arena, had no professional hockey team in it. It refers to a class of submarine and to a tactical formation, a nod to Connecticut's naval tradition.
The Calder Cup arrived in the club's third season, 1999–00. Hartford beat the Rochester Americans in the final, and Derek Armstrong took the playoff MVP award.
From 2010 to 2013, under owner Howard Baldwin, the team played as the Connecticut Whale. It then went back to Wolf Pack, and the name has stayed.
Two opponents matter more than the rest. Bridgeport Sound Tigers are the other Connecticut club in the league.
