The Lehigh Valley Phantoms, who began life as the Philadelphia Phantoms, are the Hershey Bears' main rival. The edge dates from 1996, when the Philadelphia Flyers moved their affiliate in the American Hockey League (AHL) out of Hershey and into Philadelphia. The Bears had lost their parent club. The next season, 1997, they won the Calder Cup.

That was the eighth of what is now 13 Calder Cups, the most in AHL history. Three times the Bears have won it in consecutive years: 1958 and 1959, 2009 and 2010, and most recently 2023 and 2024. The Washington Capitals are their affiliate now, and the Bears send players up to them and take players down from them.

The team belongs to the Hershey Chocolate Company, and its colours are chocolate, tan, cocoa and white. The town calls itself "Chocolate Town, USA", and the jersey follows the town. The Bears are also the longest continuously operating AHL club still playing in the city where it started. Giant Center, seating 10,500, is where that continuity is on show each home night.

None of it was planned as a franchise. The Bears began in 1931 as an amateur side and played their first game on 18 February that year. They joined the league, then called the International-American Hockey League, in 1938 as its eighth member.
