The club's roots lie with a group of soldiers stationed in the town. The line from there to the present is not straight. In 1921 the side merged with a team fielded by Denbigh Mental Hospital to form Denbigh United, which folded in 1930 for want of money.

They still play at Central Park, wearing red with white trim, and the ground itself changed shape ahead of the 2024 European Under-19 Championship, when redevelopment lifted capacity past 2,000, including more than 600 seats.

The honours board runs mostly through amateur and regional competition rather than the professional pyramid: the Welsh Amateur Cup in 1924, still under the Denbigh United name, and three Welsh Alliance League titles, the last of them in 2013–14 gone through unbeaten. The most recent success came in 2022–23, when Denbigh won the Ardal North-West and the Ardal Northern League Cup together and went up into Cymru North. It followed a season, 2017–18, that had already marked the club's best league finish, second place in the Cymru Alliance.
