Between 1880 and 1895, six men who turned out for Ruthin Town also wore the Welsh shirt: in 1880 Ruthin reached the final of the Welsh Cup and lost 2-1 to Druids. It has not been back since.

The name on the shirt then was not yet Ruthin Town. What played on into the twentieth century did so as Ruthin British Legion, joining the Welsh National League's Wrexham Area section in 1949. The Legion tag came off in 1953, and the club has carried its present name since.

Ruthin's honours read like a club built for its own region rather than the top of the Welsh pyramid: North Wales Amateur Cup wins in 1967 and 1973, a Welsh Intermediate Cup in 1991-92, three WNL Premier Division Cups spread from 1991-92 to 2015-16. The club spent 1992 to 2013 in the Cymru Alliance, now Cymru North, the closest it has come to the Welsh game's higher tiers, finishing third in 2003-04 as the best of those years.

Home is the Memorial Playing Fields, known locally as the Memorial Grounds, holding 2,000. The club plays in blue with white trim and goes by The Town. Its most recent silverware came in the NEWFA Challenge Cup, taken in 2017-18 and again in 2021-22.
