About
The FAW Championship serves as the second tier of Welsh football, operating since its creation in 2019. The Football Association of Wales established the competition to replace previous structures, specifically the Huws Gray Alliance and the Welsh Football League Division One. This restructuring aimed to streamline the pathway for clubs aspiring to reach the top flight.
Unlike the single-national league format of the Cymru Premier, this competition utilises a regional split. The tournament divides into the Cymru North and the Cymru South. Each division features 16 clubs, resulting in a total of 32 participants across the second tier. The format follows a double round-robin system within each region. There are no play-offs between the North and South divisions for promotion purposes.
Promotion is determined by the champions of each division, provided they meet the necessary FAW licensing criteria regarding grounds and facilities. Additionally, runners-up from both regions have also secured promotion in recent seasons. Relegation from these divisions leads to the Ardal Leagues, which constitute the third tier of the Welsh pyramid. This structure is designed to reduce travel distances for clubs compared to a fully national setup.
The competition differs significantly from the Welsh Cup. The cup is a knock-out tournament open to all levels of the pyramid, whereas the championship is a league system restricted to Tier 2 clubs. While the Welsh Cup dates back to 1877, the current league format is a modern development.
Historical success in predecessor leagues points to Ton Pentre as the most titled club in the Welsh Football League Division One era with 13 titles. Swansea Town Reserves followed closely with 12 victories. For the 2023–24 season, Holywell Town and Briton Ferry Llansawel held the titles for the North and South respectively.
The competition remains distinct from the Welsh Cup in its structured league approach and from the Cymru Premier through its regional division. It provides a clear route for clubs to ascend to the Cymru Premier while managing logistical challenges inherent to Welsh football geography.
