Two league titles bookend the club's modern history: Division 2 (West) went to Pontardawe in 1960–61 and again in 1996–97, and by the time a third came in 2004–05 the shirt had already changed its name from Pontardawe Athletic to Pontardawe Town. The step up came in 2021–22, when the club topped Ardal South West, and it has since gone close to something bigger — losing in the FAW Trophy final in 2019 and again this year.

The town's football goes back further than the modern club does. Before the war, a side run by the industrialist C.F. Gilbertson had already won the early Swansea League, in 1899–1900, before folding. What plays now at Parc Ynysderw, a ground that holds 1,000, was built from scratch in 1947 and joined the Welsh League the following season under the Athletic name.

Black and white has stayed the colour since, and it gave the fixture with Ammanford AFC its own tag, the Black & White derby. A youth set-up has done quietly well alongside the first team, taking the Welsh Youth Cup and Welsh Youth League double in 1996–97 and adding league titles in the Welsh League Youth Division West across four separate seasons between 2010 and 2017.

Among those who wore the shirt, Brian Evans is the name people bring up first. He had made his name at Swansea City across a decade before Wales capped him, then closed out his playing days at Pontardawe Town in the late 1970s, taking the club as far past its usual level as his own career had already gone in the other direction.
