Treowen sits close to Newbridge, in Caerphilly county, and the club that carries the village name has spent most of a century working its way up through Gwent's local leagues rather than arriving fully formed. Treowen Stars formed in 1926, and its early decades were spent in the Abertillery & District League and the West Monmouthshire League, well below anything resembling a national pyramid.

The shift began in the early 1970s, when chairman Archie Davies moved the club into the Monmouthshire Senior League and pushed through ground improvements — changing rooms went up at Bush Park in 1973. That groundwork paid off two decades later: promotion through the Gwent County League brought a Division One title in 1991/92, then the step up into the Welsh Football League, where Treowen won Division Three the following season and reached the League Cup final, losing to Barry Town. They went back and won the cup in 1998, beating BP Llandarcy 4-3 after extra time.

What followed was harder. The club dropped out of the Welsh Football League twice, in 2001 and 2002, and left it for good in 2006, returning to the Gwent County League they had once outgrown. Getting back took until 2009/10, when a second County League Division One title reopened the door to the national system. Dean Randall spent close to seven years as manager before leaving in 2024, handing over to Ben Murphy, under whom the club won the Ardal South East in 2024/25 — a title that puts Treowen back in Cymru South, the third tier of the Welsh game, for the first time in years.

Bush Park holds under a thousand, and the club still plays in the blue shirts, red away kit, and county-league rhythms that shaped it long before promotion arrived. What Cymru South mainly hands them now is a return to fixtures against clubs that outgrew Gwent long ago, and the chance to find out where this run of form actually stands.
