The Windmill Army have made a habit of turning up for finals they weren't expected to win. That was the mood when Llantwit Major lifted the FAW Senior Cup in 2010/11, a run that took a club without professional backing past sides carrying far heavier budgets, and it set the tone for the decade that followed.

The club formed in 1962 and spent its early years working through the South Wales Amateur League, which it joined in 1971 and where the league and cup wins piled up through the 1980s. Promotion through the Welsh pyramid came later and quicker: Division Three in 2016/17, Division Two the year after, and then the title in Cymru South in 2021/22. That last one came with a catch. The Vale of Glamorgan side finished top of the table but stayed out of the Cymru Premier anyway, because Windmill Lane did not meet the ground-grading rules the higher division demands. The club has continued to run on sponsorship and community support rather than professional money, which leaves promotion tied as much to the state of the ground as to results on it.

There has been no shortage of results. In 2023/24 Llantwit Major took part in the Fenix Trophy, a European competition for amateur and semi-professional clubs, and beat the reigning Danish champions BK Skjold along the way. Windmill Lane itself holds 2,000, a capacity that has stayed fixed while the team's level of football has moved up around it, and the navy and gold colours the club plays in trace back to those first amateur league seasons in the 1970s.
