Porthmadog go into the new season back in Ardal North's parent division after winning the play-offs for the second time in four years, having already done it in 2021-22 and again in 2025-26. Two promotions of that kind in such a short stretch say less about one strong campaign than about a club that keeps sliding back down and having to climb again.

The founding date on file for decades was wrong. Porthmadog were always listed as an 1884 club until a document turned up in November 2020 pushing the date back to October 1872. Home games are played at Y Traeth, a 3,000-capacity ground with 800 seats, on the coast the club is named after.

The best-remembered names tend to be the ones who came home rather than the ones who stayed. Mel Charles, who had played at the 1958 World Cup and was John Charles's brother, turned out for Porthmadog in 1964-65 and won three North Wales championships on the trot. Clayton Blackmore, who won league titles with Manchester United and capped for Wales, joined in 2007 and later took charge of the club himself. Further back, Dave Taylor's 1993-94 season is the one still cited locally: 45 goals, enough to make him the top scorer anywhere in Europe that year.

The fixture against Pwllheli is billed locally as the Llŷn & Eifionydd derby, and Caernarfon Town and Bangor City fill out the list of long-standing regional rivals. The club's one title at the top level of the Welsh pyramid, the Cymru Alliance, dates to 2002-03. It has not been back there since.
