Gran Canaria Women

Telde, on the eastern coast of Gran Canaria, is the island's second city, and for decades its name in Spanish handball has travelled through the Las Remudas neighbourhood, where a schoolteacher named Antonio Moreno set up a club in 1978. The team that grew out of that school project now plays under the Rocasa Gran Canaria name, a nod to the retail chain that has backed the club for more than 35 years, and it has stayed in the top flight, the Liga Guerreras Iberdrola, since winning promotion in 1989.

The trophies followed once the club had established itself: two Copa de la Reina titles in the mid-2010s, a run of Supercopa de España wins stretching from 2017 to 2026, and a league championship in 2018-19 that it matched again in 2025-26. In between came continental success, the EHF European Cup in 2021-22, results that pulled a club from a 600-seat hall in Telde onto a European stage.

That hall, the Pabellón Insular Antonio Moreno, is named after the club's founder, and it is where Fela Monzón spent 18 years before retiring as captain at the end of the 2024-25 season. The club has kept faith with its neighbourhood too, running youth teams and school programmes in Las Remudas rather than only chasing results at senior level.
