Rostock is the fixture Hamburg circles on the calendar. Hamburg Towers and the Seawolves meet as the Nordderby, the north German derby.

The Towers exist because Hamburg had gone without professional basketball since BCJ Hamburg went bankrupt in 2002. Pascal Roller, a former player, and the entrepreneur Wolfgang Sahm set out to bring it back, and the club they founded in 2013 began playing two seasons later. The debut, a 66–65 win over Gießen 46ers on September 28, 2014, came in the ProA, the second tier of German basketball, and by 2015–16 the Towers were drawing the best average attendance in the division.

Promotion took until 2019. The club finished top of the ProA table, beat Chemnitz Niners in the promotion semifinal, and won the championship against Nürnberg Falcons on May 4 to reach the Basketball Bundesliga for the first time. The first top-flight season ended with a last-place finish before the schedule was cut short, and by 2021–22 it was playing in the EuroCup, reaching the round of 16 that season and again the next.

Bayern Munich and Alba Berlin are the exception — those games move to the Barclays Arena, and it was there that the club set its attendance record: 12,570.
