Heracles Almelo enter the new Eredivisie season looking to consolidate a top-flight place that came back with promotion in 2022/23.

The club traces to 3 May 1903, when it was founded in Almelo under the name Hercules; the change to Heracles followed in 1906. Two more renamings marked later turns in its history — SC Heracles '74 after the amateur club's dissolution in 1974, then Heracles Almelo from 1 July 1998, at the request of the city authorities. No merger sits behind any of it, only a name changing hands with the times.

Black and white have covered the team since 1910, a switch from the green and black worn as Hercules. Wout Weghorst passed through it on his way to Wolfsburg, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United, and Remko Pasveer followed a similar path from Almelo's goal to Ajax and PSV. That production line now runs jointly with FC Twente, the club against which Heracles measures itself most sharply — the Twente derby dates to 1966 in the professional era.

The championship years belong to a different Netherlands entirely: two national titles, in 1927 and 1941, from the pre-professional era. Since then, honours have come at the second level — Eerste Divisie wins in 1961/62, 1984/85, 2004/05 and 2022/23 — with the KNVB Cup never won; the closest the club came was a runners-up finish in 2011/12, beaten by PSV.
