The gold cup came in 2011. In January 2012, it took professional status and a place in the I-League Second Division, where it played three seasons and finished third in the final round of 2014.

What is now the football side grew out of Kalighat Milan Sangha, a cultural association from 1944. The older Kalighat Club walked out of the Indian Football Association in 1939, alongside Mohammedan and East Bengal, to set up the Bengal Football Association. The football team only began competing officially in 1966.

Arnab Das Sharma arrived at Kalighat as a 13-year-old goalkeeper in 2000 and left for a career that took in East Bengal, Mohammedan Sporting, Mohun Bagan and Mumbai City, among others.
