Lions

A team too small for its own town made the trip north in 1934, arriving in Detroit from Portsmouth, Ohio, where it had played as the Spartans since joining the NFL four years earlier. The move came with a new name, the Lions.

Three more followed, in 1952, 1953 and 1957, an era carried by Bobby Layne at quarterback. Division titles have come only rarely since, but no NFL Championship has followed that 1957 team.

Every Thanksgiving Day the Lions play at home, a fixture that has outlasted most of the rosters that filled it. Their oldest rivalry runs against the Green Bay Packers, the longest continuously played series in NFL history, though Chicago and Minnesota carry their own weight on the schedule.

All four championships belong to the era before the Super Bowl existed. Detroit has never played in one.
