In 2014 Manglerud Star returned to the top flight because Rosenborg IHK went bankrupt and someone had to take the vacant place. It fit a club that had spent the previous two decades disappearing and reappearing under other names — Oslo Hockey after a merger with Furuset in 1989, LM-90 once Lambertseter joined in, then Spektrum Flyers through a collaboration with Furuset in the mid-1990s — before Manglerud Star was the name on the shirt again.

The shirt itself only turned yellow and green in 1973, the year the team first reached the top division; before that it played in green and white. The switch coincided with the club's one genuine run at the summit of Norwegian hockey: five straight runner-up finishes from 1975 to 1979, broken twice by outright titles, in 1977 and 1978. Nothing since has matched it, and a 2005 relegation, brought on by financial trouble, pushed the club back into rebuilding mode until promotion returned in 2009.

Several numbers have gone out of circulation at Manglerudhallen, an arena of 2,000 seats known locally as "the Garage" — among them Jørn Goldstein's number one and Trond Abrahamsen's seven, kept aside for players who defined the club's identity in Oslo hockey rather than for what they won. That identity is measured mostly against Vålerenga, whose meetings with Manglerud Star carry the label "Oslo derby," and increasingly against Grüner, close enough as neighbours that the two clubs discussed merging in 2023 to give themselves a real chance against Vålerenga. Nothing has come of it since, and the club that once stood two seasons from three straight titles is still looking for its next one.
