Opava

Opava sits in Czech Silesia, close enough to the Polish border that its basketball rivalry with NH Ostrava is fought out as the Silesian Derby. Organised basketball in the town dates to 15 December 1945, and the club has traded under six sponsored names since, from ICEC Opava in the mid-1990s to BK Breda & Weinstein a decade later.

The "Yellow Devils" built their reputation in a short, sharp run either side of the millennium, taking the Czech league in 1996/97 and 1997/98, then again in 2001/02 and 2002/03. Opava broke ERA Basketball Nymburk's 18-year grip on the championship in 2022/23, ending a long period without a league title. Jakub Šiřina, the club's long-time captain, was named MVP of that Finals series.

Domestic success has been matched, unevenly, on the continental stage. In their 2018/19 Basketball Champions League debut, Opava beat Nanterre 92 and Telekom Baskets Bonn.

Closer to home, the fixture against BK Děčín carries its own name, the Derby Severu.
