Every ranking table in the Dutch league marks the same fixture in red: Donar against Heroes Den Bosch, the arch-rival.

That name has changed more than once. What began on 20 January 1951 as a student association, GSSV Donar, tied to the corps Vindicat, broke away and turned professional in 1973 under Nationale Nederlanden.

The trophies kept coming regardless of what the shirt said. Seven Dutch league titles run from 1982 through to 2018, and the club has lifted the national cup eight times, most recently in 2026. In Europe, the club opened its FIBA Europe Cup history in October 2015 with a win over Egis Körmend, and reached the semi-final of that competition in 2017–18 before Umana Reyer Venezia ended the run.

None of it has come without scares. Financial trouble has shadowed the club repeatedly, in 1983, 1994, 1998 and 2014, and in July 2023 debts past €1.7 million pushed Donar into bankruptcy. Supporters funded the rescue themselves, and the club continued as Donar Groningen BV.
