Puerto Cortés earns its living from its docks — Honduras's busiest Caribbean port. It was in one of its neighbourhoods, Barrio Campo Rojo, that a group of residents decided the port needed a football club of its own. On 4 July 1960, gathered at the home of René Paiz, Roberto Mejía led founders in choosing a name: Platense, borrowed from the Argentine club they had simply come to admire.
Honours have come in short, sharp bursts rather than in numbers: the league title in 1965-66, then again in the 2000-01 Clausura, bookending a Segunda División championship in 1982 that took the club back among the elite. The Copa de Honduras followed twice in successive years, 1996 and 1997, and once more in 2018.
What defines the record just as much is how often the club has stopped one step short — beaten finalists in 1996-97, in the 2000-01 and 2002-03 Apertura, and again in the 2016-17 Apertura.
