About

Top League serves as the premier professional rugby union competition in Japan. The national governing body, the Japan Rugby Football Union, established the tournament in 2003 to replace the semi-professional Japan Company Rugby Football Championship. Following a structural overhaul in 2022, the event transitioned to a fully professional model under the name Japan Rugby League One, although local media and historical records frequently retain the original designation.

The current season features six clubs competing for the championship title: Black Rams Tokyo, Green Rockets Tokatsu, Hurricanes, Kobelco Kobe Steelers, Kubota Spears Funabashi Tokyo Bay, and Shining Arcs. While the broader three-tier system divides teams into Divisions 1, 2, and 3, the top flight operates with a distinct format. Twelve teams participate in the highest tier, split into Conference A and B for an 18-match regular season. The top six sides advance to the playoffs, where the highest seeds receive a bye to the semi-finals.

Promotion and relegation are determined through "The Replacement Battle." The bottom two teams from the regular season face the champion and runner-up from Division 2 in a two-legged aggregate series. This structure maintains a direct link between the tiers. The tournament is notable for its corporate ownership model, with clubs traditionally backed by major corporations rather than operating as purely regional franchises. Toshiba Brave Lupus Tokyo holds the record for the most titles won, securing seven championships across both the Top League and JRLO eras. The reigning champion for the 2025–26 cycle is the Kobelco Kobe Steelers.

The competition remains separate from the All-Japan Rugby Football Championship, which operates as a knockout event. Official details regarding fixtures and results are published on the league website.
