Académica secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Feirense in the second round of Liga Portugal 2, played on 14 August at the Estádio Sidónio da Coimbra. The home side took the lead in the second half and saw out a match that grew increasingly tense after a double red card incident. It was a result that did little to change the standings, though the gap between seventh and eighteenth place looked even wider afterwards.
The decisive moment came in the 36th minute when L. Silva found the net, giving Académica a slender advantage. By then, the game had already taken an unusual turn with back-to-back substitutions for Feirense's D. Nketia in the 18th and 19th minutes — a sequence that suggested nerves or tactical uncertainty. «And here's the thing» about the opening exchanges was that neither side could quite settle into rhythm, with Académica's Pedrinho and Feirense's T. Antunes both picking up cautions before the hour mark.
Things shifted dramatically around the 40th minute when Kaka received two red cards in consecutive minutes. The dismissal left Académica playing with ten men for the remainder of the encounter, yet they managed to protect their lead. Feirense made three changes on the hour mark, bringing on T. Antunes, A. Lopes and M. Tavares in quick succession, but could not find a way past the determined home defence. A VAR-confirmed goal was cancelled in the 83rd minute, denying Feirense what might have been a crucial equaliser.
The statistics told a story of one-sided possession without one-sided results. Feirense controlled 54 per cent of the ball and registered 13 shots compared to Académica's five, yet only three of the visitors' efforts were on target. Académica, with just 46 per cent possession, were more clinical — two shots on target yielding one goal. «To be fair», the home side's defensive organisation was the difference, with only one blocked shot against them while Feirense had six of their own efforts stopped.
The result leaves Académica on nine points in seventh place after five matches, three wins and two defeats. Feirense remain rooted at the bottom with just one point from five games, a solitary draw and four losses. The visitors have now gone two matches without a victory, having drawn their previous two fixtures, while Académica's recent form has been more encouraging with wins against Shaferes and Porto B. What this means for the season remains to be seen, but for now the home side can at least take satisfaction from seeing out a difficult afternoon.
