Afturelding beat Grotta 2-0 in the 15th round of the 1. Deild on Monday evening. The hosts kept their place at the top of the table with a comfortable win at home. J. Holtan scored both goals for the home side, one in each half. The result leaves the gap between the two teams wider than before.
And here's the thing about that first goal — Holtan found the net in the 30th minute and never looked back. Afturelding pressed forward after that, earning 12 corners while Grotta could manage only two. The away side tried to get back into it but the home attack kept finding space.
To be fair, the second half didn't offer much excitement until the final quarter. Afturelding made three changes around the hour mark, bringing on Sigurdarson, Andresson and Bjarkason together. The visitors responded by sending on Hugason in the 66th minute, but it made little difference to the shape of the game.
By then Holtan was already well clear on the scoresheet. His second goal came in the 85th minute, just after O. Bjarkason had come on as a substitute. The away end never stopped complaining after that one, but the referee had nothing more to add. Afturelding saw out the remaining minutes without incident.
The statistics tell the story plainly enough. Afturelding had 52 per cent possession and 16 shots to Grotta's four, with eight finding the target compared to just one. The visitors managed 63 attacks to 64 but couldn't turn possession into chances. Five yellow cards went to the home side against one for the away team.
Afturelding remain first with 45 points from 21 games — 14 wins, three draws and four defeats. Grotta sit seventh with 27 points, eight victories and ten losses. The hosts now lead by 18 points after the gap closed slightly in recent weeks. This was a result that confirmed what the table already showed.
