Club Brugge and Cercle Brugge met at the Jan Breydel Stadium on Sunday in the Jupiler Pro League's third round of matches, with the home side taking all three points on 1-0. The result leaves Brugge third on nine points from four games, while Cercle sit 13th on two points after four matches without a win.
And here's the thing — the match was decided in the 37th minute when Nicolò Tresoldi found the net. It was a tight affair that refused to open up, and the goal came from work at the back end of the penalty area. By then both sides had been measured in their approach.
Cercle made their first change in the 64th minute, bringing on Gary Magnee, and then doubled up at the 70-minute mark with substitutions for M. Diakhon and H. Vetlesen. A VAR review in the 71st minute cancelled a penalty appeal against Makaya Ibrahima Diaby, and the midfielder later picked up a booking in the 80th minute.
Brugge then turned up the pressure. They had nine corners to Cercle's four and completed 158 passes into the final third, but the visitors' defence held firm. Cercle made three changes in quick succession — D. Vanzeir, S. Ngoura, and the pair of V. Konate and L. Mondele — before Tresoldi himself was withdrawn in the 89th minute.
The statistics tell a story of dominance without conversion. Brugge controlled 80 per cent possession and registered 140 attacks against 64 for the visitors, yet their shot accuracy sat at 27 per cent. They managed four shots on target and created just two big chances, while Cercle, despite their 20 per cent share of the ball, kept their accuracy at 40 per cent and also produced two big chances.
What this means is that Brugge have now won three of four league games, maintaining their position near the top of the table. Cercle's run of two draws and two defeats continues, and they remain well clear of the drop zone but with little to show for their efforts so far.
