Sporting San-Jose moved to the top of the Apertura table with a 3-0 victory over Gherediano in the Primera División. The visitors took all three points in Costa Rica on Saturday evening, extending their unbeaten run to five matches. And here's the thing — they did it without dominating possession.
J. Pinto opened the scoring in the 53rd minute before A. Lopez doubled the lead in the 67th. D. Colindres added a late consolation goal for the hosts in the 87th minute after Gherediano had made several changes to their side. By then the result was never really in doubt.
What stood out was the efficiency. Sporting San-Jose registered 11 shots on target with 85 per cent accuracy, while Gherediano had 5 on target from 0.36 accuracy. The hosts held 56 per cent possession but could not create clear-cut chances. More than one shot went begging in this one.
The win moves Sporting San-Jose to 11 points from six games, one place above the hosts. Gherediano remain rooted to 10th place with just two points and no victories. They have now lost four of their last five matches, and the gap at the bottom is growing.
