Eastleigh secured a dramatic 3-2 victory over Scunthorpe at Silverlake Stadium on Saturday in the National League's third round of matches. The home side had trailed 2-1 after the visitors struck twice in the second half, but two quick goals in the 71st and 73rd minutes turned the match around after the break. H. Sidwell had opened the scoring in the 37th minute before A. Beestin and A. Blair responded for the visitors.
And here's the thing about the opening half — Eastleigh dominated the early exchanges, with Sidwell's goal coming after a period of sustained pressure. The home side's substitution of C. Howe in the 18th minute seemed designed to add fresh legs, though it was the Frenchman who made the difference in the first half. Scunthorpe's only card came early, with B. Horton booked in the 15th minute.
By then the visitors had seized control. Beestin's equaliser in the 51st minute shifted momentum, and Blair's strike four minutes later put Scunthorpe ahead 2-1. The away side made three changes at the hour mark — D. Howe, L. Brennan and J. Rowley all came on — perhaps sensing the need to hold their advantage. But the high line was picked apart in the closing stages.
The comeback unfolded with remarkable speed. Gale found the net in the 71st minute, and Lundstram completed the reversal just two minutes later. Lundstram would come off in the 88th minute after his heroics. The stadium fell silent for Scunthorpe as the home crowd rallied behind their side's late surge.
Statistics tell only part of the story. Eastleigh had 43 per cent possession but managed five shots on target with 42 per cent accuracy. Scunthorpe controlled 57 per cent of the ball and registered five shots on target, but their accuracy dropped to 33 per cent. The visitors attempted eight shots off target compared to the home side's three, suggesting they created space but couldn't finish consistently.
The result moves Eastleigh up to eighth place with ten points from five games — three wins, one draw, one defeat. Scunthorpe remain in 19th place with just four points from one win, one draw and three losses. The home side had picked one up last week against Gateshead but this performance marked a significant shift from their recent run of defeats.
