Match report

Lahti beat IFK Mariehamn 2:1 in the Veikkausliiga's Relegation Group on Monday. The result leaves the hosts seven points clear of the drop zone with nine games remaining. They've kept their heads through a difficult patch, winning three of their last five matches. And here's the thing — it wasn't a dominant display, but efficiency mattered more than control.

Aaron Lindholm opened the scoring in the 38th minute, finishing from a cross that caught the defence flat-footed. Adam Stroud doubled the lead after the break, capitalising on a defensive error in the 65th minute. Mariehamn pulled one back through Justus Ojanen in the 87th minute, but Lahti held firm. The visitors had created chances but couldn't find the cutting edge.

Coaches made several changes in search of a response. Mariehamn brought on Jelle van der Heyden in the 60th minute, followed by three substitutions in quick succession. Lahti responded with Aaron Lindholm and Momodou Sarr in the 83rd minute. The tactical shifts didn't alter the outcome, but they showed both sides were willing to take risks.

We had called for a home win with 52 per cent confidence. The analysis held up — Lahti's possession and shot accuracy told the story. They controlled 65 per cent of the ball and tested the goalkeeper seven times, while Mariehamn managed three attempts. The visitors created two big chances but failed to convert either. To be fair, the shot volume didn't translate into goals, and that gap in execution decided the match.

Lahti move to 32 points in seventh place, while Mariehamn remain in 12th with 14 points. The hosts have won three of their last five games and are on a better run than expectations suggested. Mariehamn's defeat extends their winless streak and keeps them firmly in the relegation battle. By then, the gap between them and safety will have grown to nine points if results don't improve.
