Match report

Tokyo beat Kyoto Sanga 2:0 at Ajimoto Stadium on Saturday in the J-League 1 regular season. The hosts took all three points from the sixth round of fixtures, extending their unbeaten run to five matches across all competitions. The result keeps them in sixth place while Kyoto Sanga drop further into the bottom half of the table.

The first half passed without incident until the final moments. Weverton Silva de Andrade picked up a yellow card in the 43rd minute before Everton Maceió came off at the break. Kyoto Sanga had the better of the early exchanges but Tokyo's structure held firm.

And here's the thing about this match — the decisive moments arrived late. Marcelo opened the scoring in the 70th minute, then Motoki Nagakura doubled the lead five minutes later. Tokyo made three substitutions in quick succession at the 62nd minute, bringing on Kento Hashimoto, Shion Homma and Soma Anzai. By then the game was already slipping away from Kyoto Sanga.

The statistics told the full story. Tokyo enjoyed 69 per cent possession and registered 136 attacks compared with Kyoto Sanga's 76. They hit the target six times from twelve shots inside the penalty area, while Kyoto Sanga managed just three shots on target from eight attempts. To be fair, both sides were clinical when opportunities arose, though Tokyo created more big chances — five against three.

Tokyo remain sixth with 11 points from six games, having won three, drawn two and lost once. Kyoto Sanga sit 15th with five points from one victory, two draws and three defeats. The hosts had previously drawn 1:1 with Shimizu S-Pulse on Wednesday, while Kyoto Sanga also shared points 1:1 with Yokohama F. Marinos in their last outing.

Three yellow cards for Kyoto Sanga — Weverton, Temma Matsuda and Haruki Arai — suggested the visitors were under pressure throughout. Tokyo made five substitutions in total, with Sei Muroya and Motoki Nagakura both coming off in the closing stages. A straightforward victory, but one that reflects the gulf between two sides in very different positions this season.
