Lugano extend perfect start with comfortable win at Grasshoppers
Lugano moved further clear at the top of the Superleague with a 4-1 victory over Grasshoppers in their second regular season match on Saturday. The visitors had been unbeaten through five games before this fixture and proved once again why they lead the table with six wins from six. Grasshoppers, meanwhile, remain 11th after picking up just one win in their opening six matches.
And here's the thing about the opening exchanges — by the 20th minute you could already sense the visitors' intent. The first goal came at 22 minutes when L. Plange found space to finish, though that was a Grasshoppers player among the scorers. To be fair, it gave the hosts a brief moment of hope before everything shifted.
The second half belonged to Lugano. D. Moncada restored the visitors' lead at 52 minutes, and Y. Cimignani added a second at 71 before E. Pihlstrom extended it to 4-1 at 78. Cimignani completed his brace late on at 90+2 minutes, while the hosts managed just a single goal from Plange's earlier effort.
The statistics tell their own story. Lugano dominated possession at 59 per cent and created more clear-cut opportunities, registering four big chances against three for the hosts. They also had six shots on target compared to Grasshoppers' four, and the difference in shots accuracy — 0.43 versus 0.36 — reflected the clinical nature of the visitors' finishing.
The result leaves Lugano eight points clear at the summit with 18 points from six games and a perfect record. Grasshoppers sit on five points with only four more points available from two games, meaning the gap between them has now opened to 13 points. A performance that felt like a statement rather than a contest.
