Westerlo ended their regular season fifth round with a comfortable 4-0 win over Mechelen at the AFAS Stadion on Saturday. The visitors moved from 13th to within touching distance of their hosts, who remain rooted to the bottom of the table with two points after five matches.
Isa Sakamoto gave Westerlo the lead after just seven minutes, and by then the visitors had already established their rhythm. Shunsuke Saito doubled the advantage before half-time with a second goal, and the home side's defence never really recovered. Saito struck again in the 67th minute, and Nikola Storm added a fourth to seal the result late on.
And here's the thing about the statistics: Mechelen held 56 per cent possession but managed only one shot on target from seven attempts inside the penalty area. Westerlo, with less possession, created five big chances and hit the target six times. The visitors threw bodies in the way when needed, and the home side's 13 per cent shot accuracy told the story of a game that never really got going.
Yellow cards came at regular intervals — Cisse Sandra and Sakamoto in the first half, then Vanrafelghem, Decherf and Hammar for Mechelen in the second. Substitutions trickled through for both sides, with Westerlo bringing on Storm for Saito in the 73rd minute before adding more bodies to close the game out.
We had given Mechelen a narrow win as our prediction, but the match went another way entirely. The visitors played the second half a man up in spirit if not in numbers, and their efficiency with chances proved decisive. The home side simply couldn't respond when the scoreline turned against them.
The result leaves Mechelen bottom of the Jupiler Pro League table, still searching for their first victory of the campaign. Westerlo move closer to the middle of the pack, extending their unbeaten run to three matches across all competitions. The gap between the two sides now stands at two points, but the quality of performance suggests the table position will shift further before the season is done.
