MVV Maastricht secured a 2:1 victory over Jong Utrecht in the opening round of the Eerste Divisie at home on Sunday. The hosts took an early lead through Ilias Breugelmans in the second minute before B. Menzo equalised for the visitors just four minutes later. E. Sierra then restored the advantage after the interval, and despite a late surge from Jong Utrecht, MVV held on for their second win in five games.
It was Breugelmans who struck first, finishing a move inside the opening two minutes to put the home side ahead. Menzo responded quickly, finding the net in the sixth minute to level matters. E. Adiele picked up a yellow card in the 16th minute before N. Beulens came off for MVV at the 25-minute mark. The first half ended with a substitution for Jong Utrecht, T. Vinogradac, and L. Daneels booked just before the break.
Sierra broke the deadlock early in the second half, scoring in the 46th minute to put MVV back in front. The visitors pushed for an equaliser but could not find a way past the home defence. E. Adiele was substituted for Jong Utrecht in the 58th minute, while MVV brought on D. Asante for B. Menzo in the 85th minute to see out the game. The final substitution for the hosts was Asante himself in the 88th minute.
MVV dominated possession with 57 per cent and registered 14 shots, seven on target. Jong Utrecht had more corners, five to three, but their shots lacked precision with only three on target from 10 attempts. The hosts completed 333 of 424 passes while the visitors managed 212 from 312. MVV also had slightly more attacks, 103 to 90, and conceded fewer goalkeeper saves, two compared to five.
The result keeps MVV in second place with 13 points from five matches, their only blemish a draw with Patro Eisden in their previous outing. Jong Utrecht remain bottom of the table with just one point from six games, a run of five defeats stretching back to early July. The gap between the two sides was evident on the pitch, with MVV controlling the tempo and the visitors unable to string together meaningful sequences.
