Njarðvík claim vital victory over struggling Vestri
Njarðvík secured a decisive 3:1 win against Vestri in the 17th round of Iceland's 1. deild on Saturday afternoon. The hosts moved closer to play-off contention while Vestri's hopes of climbing the table took another blow. And here's the thing — this was not a game decided by dominance on paper.
J. Selven opened the scoring after just one minute, catching the visitors off-guard. Vestri responded before the half through V. Johannsson, who equalised on 45 minutes. T. Phete collected a yellow card in the 40th minute as tensions rose before the break. To be fair, both sides had chances, but Njarðvík's early strike set the tone.
The second half belonged to O. Diouck. The striker netted in the 64th minute and added a second seven minutes later to put the result beyond doubt. Vestri's manager brought on V. Johannsson on 77 minutes in a vain attempt to get back into the game. By then, the momentum had shifted entirely.
Five substitutions were made in total, with Njarðvík making three changes — L. Fernandes, S. Fall, and B. Bjarkason on 62nd, 65th, and 65th minutes respectively — while Vestri introduced C. Morfelt and Edson Eduardo. The home side managed the game well after going ahead, refusing to go away despite Vestri's possession advantage.
The statistics told a different story. Vestri held 53 per cent possession and won six corners to three, but Njarðvík were far more clinical with eight shots on target compared to four. The visitors registered just one shot off target while the hosts fired four wide. Many shots with one goal means chances went begging — and that was exactly Vestri's problem.
Njarðvík sit fourth with 38 points from 22 games, eight behind the leaders. Vestri remain eighth on 28 points from 23 outings, unable to afford another slip if their ambitions are to materialise. The draw brought them together early, but this result widened the gap considerably.
