Toluca claimed a 2-1 victory over Querétaro at Estadio La Corregidora in the fifth round of the Liga MX Apertura on Friday night. A penalty from F. Vinas in the 90th minute cancelled out Helinho's opener and kept the visitors on track for a third win in six matches.
The match turned early when D. Barbosa received a red card in the 31st minute, leaving Querétaro to fight with ten men. A. Vega and F. Arce were both yellow-carded before half-time, and A. Avila missed a penalty on 45+6 – a moment that felt like it would define the evening.
Helninho finally broke the deadlock in the 65th minute, but S. Homenchenko equalised four minutes later to keep the visitors from slipping further behind. By then Toluca had weathered the storm, and when Vinas stepped up to take the spot-kick in the 90th minute he made no mistake.
Both sides registered identical possession figures of 0.5 and shot accuracy of 0.17, though the hosts managed more shots inside the penalty area. Querétaro's 6 blocked shots and 9 shots off target suggested they created openings but couldn't convert them, while Toluca's goalkeeper saved 2 compared to 1 for the hosts.
The result moves Toluca to second place with 13 points from four wins and a draw, while Querétaro remain sixth on 10 points after three victories and two defeats. The visitors extended their recent good run, having lost only one of their last six matches across all competitions.
