Racing Santander and Villarreal shared the points in a 2-2 draw at El Sardinero on Saturday evening. The La Liga match opened with Racing taking control, but Villarreal fought back to salvage a share of the spoils. The result leaves Racing in 11th place with four points from four games, while Villarreal remain 16th with two points.
Racing struck first through Andrés Martín with a penalty in the 21st minute. Sergio Martínez added a second in the 34th, and by then the home side looked set for all three points. Villarreal responded immediately after the break with goals from Pap Gueye and Nicolas Pépé, both arriving in the 45th minute. Pépé even found the net again in the 45+1 minute, though the final score held at 2-2.
And here's the thing about the statistics. Villarreal dominated possession at 59 per cent and registered seven shots on target with 58 per cent accuracy. Racing managed only three shots on target at 18 per cent accuracy, yet recorded a higher expected goals figure of 1.87 compared to Villarreal's 0.67. To be fair, Racing created two big chances against one for the visitors.
The match produced plenty of stoppages. Racing received two yellow cards through Gorka Puerta and Pablo Gueye, while Villarreal were booked four times with cards for Juan Foyth, José López, Pablo Ramón and Santiago Mourino. Both sides made multiple substitutions, with Racing bringing on Álvaro Villalibre and Sergio Canales among others.
The draw brought Racing closer to mid-table stability after a difficult start. Villarreal's inability to secure a win continues to haunt them in the standings. Four games in and neither side has found a rhythm that suggests a quick climb from their current positions.
