Vissel Kobe beat Tokyo Verdy 2-0 at Ajimoto Stadium in the fifth round of the J-League 1 regular season. The away side took the lead through Issei Takahashi in the sixteenth minute before Katsuya Nagato doubled their advantage shortly after the break. Tokyo Verdy had more possession but found no answer to the visitors' structure.
And here's the thing about the opening goal — Takahashi's finish came after a period where Tokyo controlled the tempo. The hosts had 58 per cent of the ball but registered zero shots on target, while Vissel Kobe managed seven. By then the visitors had already created two big chances compared to the home side's none.
Tokyo Verdy looked tired from the first whistle. They lost aerial duels despite matching the opposition at 62 each, and their six key passes went nowhere near the quality of Kobe's nine. Three yellow cards — Inoue, Fukuda and Goke — told you the frustration building inside the penalty area.
The second half brought more of the same pattern. Nagato's fifty-first minute strike stretched the back line and killed any remaining hope of a comeback. Tokyo made five substitutions but could not change the shape of the game, while Kobe's discipline held firm with only Meshino booked after the restart.
The result leaves Tokyo Verdy bottom of the table on two points from four games, while Vissel Kobe move up to sixth with seven points. The hosts have now lost three of their last four league matches, including this one and a 2-0 defeat to Kashiwa Reysol last month.
