Varzim beat Trofense 1-0 in the opening match of Liga 3's regular season on Saturday. The visitors took all three points thanks to D. Rebelo's forty-first-minute strike, moving to the top of the table after four games. Trofense, meanwhile, remain seventh with four points from their first four fixtures.
And here's the thing about Rebelo's goal — it came after Trofense had been pushing forward with decent intent. The Portuguese striker finished a move that picked up pace down the right, and the ball found him in space inside the box. Trofense dug in after that, but Rebelo and his teammates held their nerve through a second half that grew increasingly tense.
By then, the match had settled into a pattern. Trofense pressed with more urgency, throwing everything at it in search of an equaliser. Varzim worked the channels when they could, and the visitors' shot count reflected that — five on target against just one for the hosts. Trofense had more attacks overall, eighty-four to one hundred, but the difference in quality showed in the conversion rate.
There were enough cards to keep things lively. Boloto picked up the first booking in the seventeenth minute, and M. Diarra followed in stoppage time of the first half. V. Sousa went to the referee in the fifty-ninth minute, and S. Ufala completed the quartet at the final whistle. Five substitutions were made in total, with Rebelo and A. Gomes both coming off in the sixty-second minute for the visitors.
Statistically, Varzim dominated possession at fifty-nine per cent and generated more corners, six to two. Trofense registered five shots off target but only one on target all afternoon. The visitors, by contrast, kept their shots tighter and scored from one of them. That is the sort of efficiency that separates sides at this level.
Varzim's position at the summit follows three wins from their opening four games. Trofense have one victory, one draw and two defeats so far — a mixed start that leaves them with work to do. The result means Varzim extend their lead, while Trofense must now look to improve their attacking output before the next round.
