V-Varen Nagasaki 2:1 Kyoto Sanga
V-Varen Nagasaki took all three points against Kyoto Sanga in the opening round of the J-League 1 regular season. The hosts ran out 2-1 winners at the Nagasaki stadium on Sunday. It was a match decided by moments rather than dominance, with both sides creating chances but only Nagasaki finding the cutting edge when it mattered.
Thiago opened the scoring in the 29th minute, giving his side the lead they would not surrender. Kyoto responded well and Rafael Elias equalised five minutes after the interval, making it 1-1 at half-time. The old head settled them down as Nagasaki regained control.
There were no dismissals to complicate matters, though the referee did not shy away from showing cards. Joao Pedro and Weverton picked up yellows for Kyoto, while Rafael Elias and H. Onaga were booked for the hosts. The incident went to review briefly but nothing was overturned.
Substitutions came thick and fast in the second half. Henrique Trevisan, Dudu Giusti, R. Kato, Thiago, K. Nagata, R. Yamada, H. Arai and M. Sekiguchi were all brought on as managers looked for answers. By then the game had settled into a rhythm neither side could break.
The statistics tell a story of possession without penetration. Kyoto held 58 per cent of the ball but Nagasaki created three big chances to Kyoto's one. The hosts registered 13 key passes against eight for the visitors, and their shot accuracy of 25 per cent proved enough to convert two efforts on target.
What the result means is straightforward. Nagasaki move to six points from their opening two matches, climbing off the foot of the table. Kyoto remain on five points after one win, two draws and three defeats. The gap between them is small, but the momentum has shifted.
