Zemplin Michalovce drew 1-1 with Komarno in the Superliga's Regular Season third round on Saturday. The result leaves both sides level at the final whistle, though the table tells very different stories. Zemplin sit fifth with ten points from seven games, while Komarno languish in tenth with four.
The opening goal came in the twentieth minute when J. Bernat put the hosts ahead. It was a clean finish, and for a while Zemplin looked comfortable with the lead. Komarno had to chase the game from that point, and they didn't do it without some frustration. By then the yellow cards were already starting to accumulate.
Komarno equalised in the sixty-third minute through M. Bednar, and suddenly the match opened up again. The hosts had a man sent off just ten minutes later when F. Dlubac received a red card. Things came to a head after that, with Komarno pressing forward and Zemplin trying to close the game out with ten men. The visitors created one big chance from open play, while the hosts managed none.
There were plenty of cards in the second half. Yellow cards for K. Domonkos, L. Lemishko, P. Volanakis, R. Pillar, and then three more late on for Y. Muritala, O. Kalemi, and N. Czibor. Substitutions included D. Zak, R. Korba, J. Bernat, J. Palan, and B. Cottrell as both managers tried to find a winner. To be fair, neither side could quite turn it around.
The statistics show a match that was reasonably balanced. Zemplin held 52 per cent possession and completed 400 passes compared to Komarno's 382. Both sides registered four shots on target, though Komarno were more accurate at 50 per cent against 36 per cent. The hosts launched 82 attacks to the visitors' 66, but the final third was where the difference showed — Zemplin made 109 passes into the opposition half while Komarno managed 57.
What matters most is where this leaves the table. Zemplin extend their unbeaten run to eight matches across all competitions, though this draw doesn't take them any closer to the top four. Komarno remain winless in seven games and four draws offer little comfort. They need a result soon, and they needed one today.
