About the player
Colby Donovan's route to Celtic's first team ran through a loan that never happened. In January 2025 a move to Dundee was close to being finalised, but injuries to Celtic's first-choice right-backs stopped the deal going through.
He had spent the previous two years with Celtic B in the Lowland League, appearing 35 times and scoring twice, and also featured in the UEFA Youth League before that breakthrough came. His senior debut followed on 23 August 2025, when he came off the bench in a 3–0 Scottish Premiership win over Livingston, and within weeks he was given his first European start, against Red Star Belgrade in the Europa League.
His first season in and around the first team also brought a Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup double. Not everything has gone smoothly — a Scottish Premiership match against Dundee in April 2026 turned on a penalty conceded by Donovan that VAR upheld amid protests, and later that month a knee injury picked up in a defeat to Dundee United forced him to pull out of the Scotland Under-21 squad.
At youth level he has been capped seven times by Scotland's Under-19s and three times by the Under-21s.
