About the player
Ludwig Simon Małachowski Thorell came through the Stockholm club IF Brommapojkarna, where he made his senior bow in the Superettan with a single appearance in November 2022. From there his path ran through the Swedish leagues rather than in a straight line: a loan at AFC Eskilstuna brought seven league games and a goal, before a move to Sandvikens IF in early 2024 gave him a settled run of 30 appearances across the season.
It was at Mjällby AIF, from January 2025, that Thorell's game took shape. Across two seasons he made 35 league appearances and scored four goals, with five caps for the U21s. Born in Stockholm, he is also eligible for Poland through his mother, though he has not played for them.
In July 2026, FC Basel 1893 signed him for a reported fee of around €2.5 million, a package that could rise to roughly 33 million Swedish kronor with add-ons. The Swiss club handed him a contract running until 2030 and the number 8 shirt. By August 2026 he had made three league appearances for Basel.
