Luke Heeney

Luke Heeney's move to Waterford for the 2026 season closed a chapter that had run for almost seven years at Drogheda United, where he left as a free agent in December 2025, just two appearances short of 200 for the club. He had joined Drogheda on a free transfer in February 2019 after a single Premier Division outing for St Patrick's Athletic, the club whose academy he had entered in 2015 following his schoolboy days at St Kevin's Boys, where he won an Under-17 national league title. At Drogheda, Heeney became a regular fixture in midfield, making 199 competitive appearances and scoring four goals. He played his part in the club's 2020 First Division title win, scoring in the season's final game to help secure promotion. His 150th appearance for Drogheda came in September 2024, by which point manager Kevin Doherty had singled him out as the club's standout player. Two months later, he came off the bench in the FAI Cup final as Drogheda beat Derry City 2–0.

Since signing for Waterford, Heeney has made 16 appearances in the Premier Division as of June 2026, continuing his career as a midfielder capable of playing at right back.
