Marco Rente

Marco Rente's path to Dutch football ran through the German lower leagues rather than a big academy. Born in Siegen, he came up through local youth football at JSG Kirchen and SG 06 Betzdorf before joining Sportfreunde Siegen's academy and then its first team. A season at TuS Erndtebrück followed, and in 2018 he signed for Borussia Dortmund II, where he spent two years without ever making the step up to Dortmund's senior side.

The move that changed his career came in August 2020, when he joined Heracles Almelo on a free transfer. He grew into an important figure there, and in the 2022–23 season he made 31 appearances and scored three goals as Heracles won the Eerste Divisie and returned to the Eredivisie, form that earned him a place in the Keuken Kampioen Divisie Team of the Week.

In June 2023 Rente signed for FC Groningen, again reported by most sources as a free move despite one outlet citing a fee. He settled quickly into the side as a regular starter and was made the team's second captain during their Eredivisie campaigns. He played his part in another promotion push, featuring in the decisive match against Roda JC on 10 May 2024 that sent Groningen up to the Eredivisie. By May 2026 he had passed 100 appearances for the club, starting all but two of them, and has scored seven goals for Groningen — notably finding the net in the opening match of each of his three seasons there.

Despite years playing in the Netherlands and speaking Dutch, Rente remains uncapped at senior international level.
