About the player
Tyrique Christopher Mercera spent his amateur years delivering parcels for DHL before football turned into a full-time job. He came through the youth ranks at DHC Delft and Alphense Boys before joining SC Cambuur's academy in 2022, made his first-team debut in November 2023, and only signed his first professional contract the following summer.
The breakthrough came on 23 September 2024, when Mercera scored twice in a 4–0 win over Jong FC Utrecht in the Eerste Divisie. The brace made him the first defender in the league that season to be named e-Boekhouden.nl Player of the Week, and the first Cambuur defender to score twice in a league match since Matthew Steenvoorden in April 2019.
His form for Cambuur brought international recognition: Mercera made his debut for Curaçao on 15 November 2024, coming on as a substitute in a 5–0 CONCACAF Nations League B win over Saint Martin.
By the time he left Cambuur, Mercera had made 47 appearances and scored three goals for the club. In July 2025 he moved to FC Groningen on a four-year contract, joining the Eredivisie side as a right-footed defender.
