About the player
Vasil Panayotov is not a career-long defensive midfielder for one club. Registered by Levski Sofia as a teenager, he never made a senior appearance there and spent his first professional season out on loan at Volov Shumen. Poland followed twice, first at Zawisza Bydgoszcz and later at Stal Mielec, with a return to Beroe Stara Zagora in between. In June 2017 he went back to Levski Sofia on a free transfer, closing the loop on the club where he had started.
He settled in Varna in August 2018, joining Cherno More on a free transfer, and has stayed there since. That longevity has told: Panayotov grew into the role of team captain, and it was as captain that he lifted the Bulgarian Cup with Cherno More in the 2024–25 season, the defining honour of his career so far.
International recognition came comparatively late. He was called up to the Bulgaria national team and won his first cap on 10 September 2019; by late 2024 he had earned six of them. His one goal for the national side arrived on 18 November 2024, against Belarus in the UEFA Nations League.
Sofascore lists him as right-footed, though FootballTransfers has described him as comfortable using either foot.
