About the player
Ilyas Chouaref came through the youth academy at LB Châteauroux, where he progressed for over a decade before making his senior debut in December 2018 and signing his first professional contract in October 2019. He stayed with the club until the summer of 2022, when he moved to FC Sion on a free transfer. Since then he has become a fixture at Sion, passing 145 league appearances and 22 goals for the club, and in the 2025–26 Swiss Super League season alone he scored 9 goals in 38 matches.
Born in Châteauroux, Chouaref had represented France at under-19 level, earning a single cap. His international path took a turn in February 2025, when he obtained Maltese citizenship through ancestry. He made his senior debut for Malta on 21 March 2025 against Finland in a World Cup qualifier, and has since gone on to earn 12 caps for his adopted national side without yet opening his scoring account at that level.
Chouaref has swapped a France youth pathway for a senior international career abroad.
