Al-Masry SC

The Canal Derby against Ismaily SC belongs to Port Said and the towns around it, but the fixture that shadows Al-Masry SC everywhere else is the one against Al Ahly SC. On 1 February 2012, after Al-Masry won 3–1 at home, its supporters attacked Al Ahly fans in the stands. At least 74 people died and more than 500 were injured. The domestic league was suspended for two years, Al-Masry withdrew from the following season, and the club was barred from playing at its own ground until 2018. Eleven men were sentenced to death over the riot.

The ground itself no longer stands. The old Al Masry Club Stadium, home to the club for decades, was demolished in 2021–2022, and Al-Masry has since played its matches at the New Suez Stadium, a rented venue in a different city while a 22,566-seat replacement rises in Port Said.

Founded on 18 March 1920 by a group of Egyptians, the club took green and white from the flag raised during the 1919 revolution against British rule, and its crest carries a Pharaonic eagle drawn from Tutankhamun's pendants rather than anything borrowed from football iconography. The name itself, Al-Masry, simply means "the Egyptian."

None of that patriotic weight has translated into the country's top prize: Al-Masry has never won the Egyptian Premier League. Its dominance belonged to an earlier, narrower stage, the Canal Zone League, which it took every year from 1932 to 1948. Since then there has been one Egypt Cup, in 1997–98, against nine runner-up finishes stretching from 1926–27 to 2016–17. Hossam Hassan, once a player for the club, returned as head coach between 2015 and 2016 and took the team to fourth place in the league and a place in the CAF Confederation Cup, a rare high point between the riot and the demolition.
