Matches against Al-Bakriya carry the weight in Unaizah, part of a wider Qassim rivalry that also flares up whenever Al-Taawoun or Al-Kholood come to town. Founded in 1960 as Al-Nahda, the club changed its name twice more, to Al-Urooba in 1966 and finally to Al-Najma in 1968, registered under that name in January 1969.

Promotion has come twice by winning the Saudi First Division League outright, in 1989–90 and again in 1993–94, with a runners-up finish in between in 1991–92. The best the club managed once it got there was third place in the Saudi Pro League in 1997–98, a season built around Sulaiman Al-Hadithi, who finished as the division's top scorer with 16 goals.

The squad over the years has carried a noticeably international stamp for a provincial club, with players arriving from Algeria, Honduras, Brazil, Bulgaria, Tunisia and Iraq at various points. One title sometimes attached to the club does not belong to it: the King's Cup wins often credited to Al-Najma actually belong to a Bahraini club of the same name, not to the side from Unaizah, which has never lifted that trophy.

Home games are played at the Al-Najma Club Stadium, which holds 3,000 people.
