Diego Maradona played his first senior minutes here in October 1976 and stayed until 1981. The club has built its reputation on that habit ever since: a production line rather than a trophy cabinet, having also sent Juan Román Riquelme and Esteban Cambiasso into the professional game. The nickname that sticks — El Semillero del Mundo, the world's seedbed — describes the business model more than any single medal.

Argentinos Juniors formed on 15 August 1904 in Villa Crespo, moving later to La Paternal, the Buenos Aires neighbourhood it has never left. The ground there now carries Maradona's name — Estadio Diego Armando Maradona, 22,063 capacity — a decision that closed the loop on a player who came through the youth system before anyone outside La Paternal had heard of him.

The peak years came close together: two league titles in 1984 and 1985, then the Copa Libertadores in 1985, the closest the club has come to South America's elite. A third league title followed in the 2010 Clausura. None of those repeated, and the honours list since has run through the second division instead — promotions in 1997 and 2017 among them, the kind of results a club takes when the bigger prizes aren't on offer that year.

The red shirt gives the team its everyday tag, Los Bichitos Colorados, red bugs, plainer than the seedbed nickname but the one heard around the ground on matchdays. Argentinos now play in the Liga Profesional Argentina and in the Copa Libertadores, with River Plate, Racing Club and Boca-adjacent fixtures like the Rosario Central and Gimnasia La Plata matches supplying the games that matter most on the calendar.
