Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic

Bonnyrigg is a small town in Midlothian, and football there began as a junior concern, a side called the Swifts that played under that name before switching to Bonnyrigg Rose. That switch came in 1881, and for well over a century the club stayed within junior and amateur football. It won the Scottish Junior Cup in 1965 and 1977. Four East Region Super League titles followed in the decades after.

Around 2009 and 2010 Bonnyrigg Rose came close to folding altogether. Charlie Kirkwood took over as chairman and kept the club going. What followed was not just survival but a rise: the East of Scotland Football League title in 2018, then the Lowland League in 2021. A step up into Scottish League Two came in 2022, and promotion brought a shorter name with it — Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic became Bonnyrigg Rose F.C. The stay in League Two lasted three seasons; in 2024/25 the club dropped back to the Lowland League, docked six points along the way for rule breaches.

Decades earlier, a teenage Sean Connery played junior football for the club in the early 1950s. Others who wore the shirt went on to make their names elsewhere — John White at Tottenham, Pat Stanton at Hibernian, and Craig Paterson, whose move on from Bonnyrigg eventually made him the most expensive transfer in Scottish football in 1982.

Home games are still played in red and white hoops at New Dundas Park, capacity 2,600.
