Annan Athletic go into the season in SPFL League Two, the level that has been home for most of the club's time in Scottish senior football since it first won a place there.

That place came in 2008, and not on the pitch. Gretna's collapse left a vacancy in the Scottish Football League, and the vote to fill it went to Annan over Cove Rangers, 17 votes to 12. The club itself dates to 1942, founded as Annan Air Training Corps and renamed Annan Athletic that same April.

Home is Galabank, 2,504 capacity, and the ground gave the club its second name: the Galabankies, alongside the Black and Golds for the shirt colours. Queen of the South, the other senior side in Dumfries and Galloway, is the fixture that matters most locally; Stranraer, Clyde and Berwick Rangers fill out the rest of the regional rivalries. It was Clyde that Annan beat 5-2 on aggregate in the May 2023 play-off final, the club's first promotion to League One in its history. Neither of Scotland's national cups has ever gone to Galabank; the best run in the Scottish Cup reached the fifth round, in 2015/16.

The name most followed elsewhere belongs to a former player rather than a trophy. Graham Potter turned out for Annan Athletic around the turn of the millennium, well before Brighton and then Chelsea gave him a Premier League touchline.
